I wanted to pass along some lunch box ideas that I’ve come across that one might be interested.  First, I wanted to pass along a pita bread recipe that I haven’t tried yet, but think it will be great for the kids lunches:

****To save time, consider chopping your vegetables  all at once and placing them in the appropriate containers or baggies.  With Carrots and celery, I can plan for the week. A cucumber, I usually plan for 2 days.

****Instead of buying Jello cups, make Jello (I pay .50/box most of the time for Jello) and fill those little containers you get with your tupperware that you rarely use and throw them in the lunchbox.  I made two boxes of jello and it filled 8 small containers for lunches.  Thus, instead of paying $2.50/package of six Jello cups, I paid $1.00 for 8.

****For juice, the kids use a drink thermos, and I fill it half way with juice and place it in the freezer.  The next morning pour juice to fill the thermos to the top and the kids have a nice cold drink for lunch.

It’s that time of year again where the kids are going back to school.  And, on top of all the supplies, clothes, etc., it’s time for me to start making my kid’s lunches.  My kids lunches are expensive at their school, $3.50/student, thus I let them pick one day a week to choose from the menu.  The other 4 days, they carry their lunches. 

When making the lunches, do you find yourself skipping all over your kitchen for sandwich baggies, snacks, potato chips, etc.?  Well, that was me and, honestly, it made me dread making them because I couldn’t think ahead of time and grab ALL the items I needed from the pantry, so I was constantly walking back and forth…one item at a time!

I started this last year and it made preparing lunches fast and easy.  Make a lunchbox drawer in your kitchen.  Yes, I had to empty a drawer out and figure out where I was going to put the other items in the drawer, but I’m glad I did.  I can prepare a lunch in record timing.  I strategically found a drawer closest to the fridge as that is where the other items I tend to use are placed. 

In my drawer, I’ve included baggies, disposable spoons, prepared snacks and chips.  I have the kids place items in the snack size baggies and keep the drawer stocked, so that saves me a little time and gives them a task to be responsible for. 

So, if you are making lunches many days a week, clean out a drawer and you can make lunches in record timing too!

Is it bad that I’ve started paying my kids (8 and 4 year old) .05 per coupon cut? Some may not agree with this method, but recently, I got behind on my coupon cutting and filing, so I had my kids help. I’ve learned a lot about my kids while we sat at the dining room table and cut the coupons. They would cut and I would file.

1.) I didn’t realize my kids were so in tune with what I normally buy. They were pointing out items that were familiar to them. They always had a story to go with the item.

2.) Also, I was able to to jot down some ideas of what my kids like to eat. They were pointing out the pictures of food that they like, so it gave me new ideas for our weekly menu.

3.) The pictures on the coupons lead to conversations about vacations and what we would snack on during our travels. It also lead to a discussion on when they are going to get a dog or cat(cutting out pet  food coupons).

Overall, it was a family event and the kids loved making some extra money outside of their daily chores. And, I loved the conversations and enthusiasm my kids displayed while stacking their coupons to count their money.
